Notification Scope: Choose which reports trigger notifications

What is Notification Scope?

Notification Scope lets managers choose which employee requests trigger notifications.

Previously, managers received notifications for requests submitted by both their direct and indirect reports. With this setting, managers can choose whether they want to receive notifications for:

  • Direct reports only
  • Direct and indirect reports

This setting only affects notifications. It does not change what a user can access, review, or approve in Borderless.

 

Who can use this setting?

Notification Scope is available to users with the People Manager role.

Notification Scope applies to People Manager notifications for:

  • Expense requests

  • Contractor invoice updates

  • Time off requests

 

Accessing and using this setting 

To access your Notification Scope:

  1. Open the Avatar menu 
  2. Go to the Notifications tab 
  3. Under the As a business user, I want to receive a section, locate Notification Scope.

To update your setting:

  1. Select one of the available options:
  • Direct reports only
  • Direct + indirect reports
  1. Review your notification channels for each request type, if needed
  2. Click Save at the bottom of page

 

Understanding Notification Scope Options

1. Direct reports only

Selecting Direct reports only means you'll receive notifications only for employees who report directly to you.

For example:

  • If Alex reports to you directly, you will receive notifications for Alex’s relevant requests.
  • If Sam reports to Alex, you will not receive notifications for Sam’s requests.

Direct reports only is the default setting.

 

2. Direct + indirect reports

Choosing Direct + indirect reports means you will receive notifications for everyone in your reporting hierarchy.

For example:

  • If Alex reports to you, and Sam reports to Alex, you’ll receive notifications for both Alex and Sam’s relevant requests.

 

Does this setting apply to all notification channels?

The scope setting controls whose requests can trigger notifications.

The notification channel settings control how you receive those notifications.

For example, you can choose to receive notifications for Direct reports only, and then decide whether those notifications are sent by:

  • Email
  • Push
  • In-platform notification

 

Can I turn off only some types of notifications?

Yes. Notification Scope determines whose requests generate notifications, while your notification preferences let you choose which channels are used for each request type.

For example, you may choose to receive notifications for Direct reports only, but turn off email notifications for certain request types.

 

Does this setting change what I can access?

No. This setting only controls which notifications you receive. It does not affect your permissions, visibility, approval authority, or ability to view requests in Borderless.

For example, even if you select Direct reports only, you may still be able to view requests from indirect reports if your role gives you access.

 

Why did we add this setting?

Some managers only need to be notified when their direct reports submit requests. Receiving notifications for indirect reports can create unnecessary noise, particularly in larger reporting hierarchies.

Notification Scope gives managers more control over the notifications they receive while keeping their existing access and permissions unchanged.
